Feedback welcome!

Our new web site has now been online for 2 weeks.  We invite you to help us improve the services of this site, and of your local United Way effort, by giving us input and feedback.  This can be done by posting a response to this entry, and/or by posting your thoughts in the ‘Wiki Pages’ section, or in the ‘Forums’ section.

For our mobile device users, you can access any part of our web site by appending ‘/m’ to your normal URL request.  For example, to reach our home page,

enter the URL ‘http://www.localunitedway.com/default.aspx/m’.

We are particularly interested that users of the newer mobile devices, including ‘smart phones’, be able to access relevant parts of this web site without problems.  When reporting issues and problems, please include specific information about your device, and the page/section which gave you difficulty.  We will help you resolve the problem.

Launch of updated web site

Today I am announcing the revision of our web site, to take our organization into the world of ‘web 2.0’.  Through this new web site (still found at http://www.localunitedway.com), we hope to make it easy for interested persons to be aware of relevant events in our community, make donations to the United Way cause, volunteer to help in ways valuable to different people, and provide us feedback about the United Way in our community.  This new web platform makes possible the integration of our web pages with Microsoft Office programs, and will enable us to now participate in the new ‘smart phone’ communication possibilities.

We think this is an important development for your local United Way organization.  The new web site is based on a web development platform from Microsoft called Sharepoint Services.  In effect, this conversion transfers most of the difficulty of keeping up with technology changes to Microsoft’s programming team.  We will still be responsible for updating information, and adding features which seem valuable.

The conversion from the old, outdated web site was done in collaboration with Ron Crawford of http://www.norcalsharepoint.com.  The costs of his efforts for this initial conversion have been reimbursed to the United Way of Butte and Glenn Counties by his brother, Bob Crawford, who has just retired from the construction business.  We appreciate these contributions.

This blog will replace our previous newsletter, and will be found on our site by clicking on the tab at the top named ‘Jay’s Corner’.  Please sign up for regular posts to this blog by clicking on the ‘RSS’ link at the bottom of this blog section.

Thanks to Stephanie Bird for developing the previous version of our web site, and to the ‘Now2000.com’ group for hosting our site from 2006 until today.

We look forward to your feedback on this new site.

What is a Blog?

A Blog is a site designed to help you share information. Blogs can be used as news sites, journals, diaries, team sites, and more. It is your place on the World Wide Web.

Blogs are typically displayed in reverse chronological order (newest entries first), and consist of frequent short postings. With this Blog, it is also possible for your site visitors to comment on your postings.

In business, Blogs can be used as a team communication tool. Keep team members in touch by providing a central place for links, relevant news, and even gossip.
